Three artists, each with a unique style, came together to create: Ermanna Montanari, actress, Stefano Ricci, painter and illustrator, and Daniele Roccato, composer and double bass soloist. Based on a dramaturgy written for them by Marco Martinelli, they move onstage, mingling Ricci’s dreamlike live illustrations with Montanari’s magmatic vocal sonorities, which give voice to both the Son and MADRE, and the sweet and heartrending sounds of Roccato’s double bass.

MADRE is the story of a son and his mother, who lives on a farm: she has fallen into a well. Was she distracted? Is she losing her mind? Did she do it on purpose? This is not a dialogue, it is a diptych made up of two monologues. He scolds her then goes to look for tools; winches and muskets, iron tubes and pulleys, all the “technology” required to pull her out. From deep inside herself, and from inside a well that’s as deep as infinity, she confesses. She’s not afraid, and she doesn’t feel distressed.

In this desolate landscape, what emerges is the allegory of an increasingly poisoned Mother Earth, the nightmare created by a “technology” that, instead of discretely helping humanity, imposes itself arrogantly in all its potential for destruction, capable of ruining age-old balances. In the text, which interweaves Italian and Romagna dialect, these two figures are poised between the harsh reality of our times and the symbols of a threatening and indecipherable future. They seem like emblems of an oriental fairy tale.

Ermanna Montanari’s voice, half incantation, half erosion, sets the tone for this journey into the underworld. The mother, trapped in the well, speaks from a depth that feels geological. Her words carry the sediment of centuries, of myths that have crumbled into dust. She is both an individual and an element—a maternal Earth that has ceased to nurture and has begun to decay. – Ivan Nechaev, Georgia Today, 2025

Madre (Mother) is a small masterpiece of a theater that questions us without chasing the easy consensus on culturally mainstreamed trendy topics. Furthermore, it demonstrates the true necessity of theatre with the issue it raises.” – G. Manzella, Il Manifesto

Madre is full of iconic moments—a feast for the eyes and ears. Live drawings, outstanding double bass performances, and Montanari’s magnetic voice transport us to a world between dream and disquiet.” Irina Wolf, Theatrescu
